What does "self-reliance" really mean?

I don't see self reliance and voluntarily belonging to groups as mutually exclusive. I don't see being forced to be part of a national or universal brotherhood as self reliance, however. I don't consider pick-pockets to be in my group and I view those who would take my money to fund things I don't support to be pick-pockets.
