Please help... Need suggestions..?

My friend was travelling in underground tube. he had valid ticket for zones 2-5. but he came via zone 1 in emergency. In zone 4 he was caught by an inspector. the inspector asked him from where he was coming. my friend was frightened about the prosecutions and he lied that he was coming from zone 2. but the inspector found the truth and taken all his details. my friend apologised and told that he would pay the fine.. but after 5 weeks, my friend got a letter from prosecution officer saying that legal proceedings are going to be.. in this situation my friend is very upset as he is working in a very good company. Will this react in his CRB. what should he do further with that letter. can he settle this out of court.... please anyone give suggestions....
