Purpose of star testing?

So i heard that its just for state's to look at how much students learned throughout the year. I'm kinda worried about the math part not because i suck at the subject but because my teacher's way of teaching is ineffective. Anyway is it going to affect students individually?(its not in my transcript so im guessing it doesn't matter{exit exam was there)
