Can someone help me explaining a quote from "Lord of the Flies"?

"the mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness" [Golding 64]. Explain the significance of the quotation. Does the mask truly "liberate" Jack? Discuss the connection between shame and violence through tout novel.
