Connecting to unsecured network?

My neighbor has given me permission to connect to huis unsecured network whenever I am outside with my netbook. It says I am connected , but I always get "Internet Explorer cannot open the page" messages, no matter what I try to view. This same netbook has no problems connecting at coffeehouses.
